Wilson Palacios… incredible
Wilson Palacios flew back to Honduras yesterday to be with his family after the remains of his brother, who had been kidnapped back in 2007, were found and identified 150 miles from the nation’s capital. This is why he missed Tottenham’s game against Everton.
That is obviously awful news for him, but listen to this:
Palacios heard the news about his brother at 1am on Saturday morning in the club’s hotel in Liverpool, after getting a phone call from his family. He packed his back and prepared to leave, but waited in the hotel lobby until 7am before phoning manager Harry Redknapp, to avoid waking him unnecessarily. What’s that about? He’d just received what must have been devastating news, and yet he still had the consideration to wait six hours in a hotel lobby in the middle of the night because he didn’t want to unduly bother his manager. Incredible. What a bloke.
All Harry Redknapp could say was, “I’m amazed with him”.

This is the second time in a month a relative of a Tottenham player has been killed, after Jermain Defoe’s half-brother died from stab wounds received in East London a few weeks ago.
[Contrast Palacios' behaviour with that of Ledley King who was arrested last night outside a London nightclub for suspected ABH (HERE). If the allegations are true, it would be stunningly out of character for King, who has always been considered a model professional.]

Simon, I have to admit that I, too, was pretty amazed at Palacios’ attitude. It also encouraged me in a way because too often we hear about football players getting up to no good, Ledley King being a good example, so it is nice, and particularly given that he is a Spurs player, that we’re seeing some positive publicity about the attitude of professional players.
I was thinking, and Harry did mention this, that what has happened with Palacios’ brother and also Defoe really puts things into perspective. I just hope other footballers take note that when they don’t get their own way in a game they remember that other things far more important. In the end it is only a game.
Regarding Ledley King, if the allegations are true then it is certainly out of character, and that would be a real shame. I noticed an interview with Harry early on this week where he talked about a complete ban on alcohol at the club. What are your thoughts? Do you reckon that is perhaps going too far?
